ODM Secretary General Rejects Salary Increase

In the wake of the ongoing nationwide anti-government protests against the backdrop of rampant corruption and high cost of living, to the dismay of many citizens, top government officials including lawmakers will be getting a pay rise effective 1st of July.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has turned down the proposed salary increase of Sh14,000. Responding to the report on the pay raise for senior state officials, Sifuna stated that he neither requested nor needed the raise, which was announced by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

"Let’s be clear what we are talking about here. The SRC is proposing to add 14k to my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective, I pay close to 300k in income tax every month," Sifuna said.

He added, "I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae."

Under the new salaries effective July 1, the President and his deputy's salaries will remain unchanged, while the Prime Cabinet Secretary and other Cabinet Secretaries' salaries will rise to Sh990,000 from Sh957,000.

Principal Secretaries, the Inspector General, and the Director General of NIS will now earn Sh819,844, up from Sh792,519. The Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police and Administration Police, as well as the Director of Criminal Investigations, will earn Sh684,233, up from Sh652,742.

Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate will receive Sh1,208,362 monthly, up from Sh1,185,327, and Deputy Speakers will earn Sh966,690. Majority and minority leaders will receive Sh800,019, while Members of the National Assembly and the Senate will now have a gross salary of Sh739,600, up from Sh725,502.
