Farewell Justice David Majanja

In the somber halls of Friends International Centre, family, friends, and fellow judges gathered to share anecdotes and memories of Justice David Majanja. Appointed as a High Court judge in 2011, Majanja passed away on Wednesday evening at The Nairobi Hospital, two days after being admitted for surgery. His death has left a profound sense of loss among judges, lawyers, and staff.

During a solemn service filled with tears and fond memories, Chief Justice Martha Koome led the Judiciary in honoring Majanja's life. The gathering included men and women in red robes and black suits adorned with purple ribbons, a group of judges and advocates united in mourning.

Tributes highlighted Majanja’s dedication to justice and unwavering integrity. Chief Justice Koome's eulogy praised Majanja’s judicial excellence and sharp intellect. She emphasized the need for the judiciary to remain impartial and uphold the rule of law in his absence. She also recalled Majanja's role in formulating policies on sexual harassment to protect women, expressing sorrow over the rise in femicide cases.

Former Attorney General Githu Muigai remembered Majanja as a tremendous intellectual and brilliant jurist. He spoke emotionally about Majanja’s legacy and their professional relationship, noting Majanja's deep empathy for others and his influence on legal practice.

Justice Christine Meoli described Majanja as a judge with a great sense of urgency, always ahead of himself, suggesting that perhaps he knew his time was short. She expressed gratitude for the time they had with him and the lasting impact he made.

The service was attended by Chief Justice Koome, her Deputy Philomena Mwilu, Supreme Court judges Justice Isaac Lenaola, Smokin Wanjala, and Mohamed Ibrahim, as well as National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and DPP Renson Ingonga. The Law Society of Kenya was represented by its head, Faith Odhiambo.

Majanja's father was moved by the realization of the significant impact his son had on many people. Majanja was later interred in a private family ceremony, and a memorial service is scheduled for Saturday in Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega county.
