Anguka Nayo! Gen Zs Hit Back at Raila over Calls for Dialogue with President Ruto

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio la Umoja, is receiving a backlash from young people for suggesting dialogue to address concerns raised by Gen Z during recent anti-government protests.

On Tuesday, President William Ruto signed the IEBC (Amendment) Bill, 2024, at KICC and announced a six-day national dialogue forum beginning on July 15, 2024, which Odinga supported.

“I am happy to confirm that we have had consultations and have agreed that a dialogue is the way forward out of the crisis that we are facing today in our country.” Odinga said.

The Azimio leader’s willingness to participate in the dialogue has sparked public backlash, with young people accusing him of ‘siding with their oppressors.’

In a letter titled ‘Agwambo Kaa Home’ addressed to Odinga by Gen Z on Tuesday, the youths voiced their frustrations with his decision.

“We will not allow you to hijack our movement to satisfy your political greed. You do not speak for us and today you have shown that you stand with the thieves and killers. We will not be silenced,” the letter stated.

Gen Z also took to social media to express their disdain for the party leader.

"Raila Odinga is the biggest enemy of the Gen-Z movement. He has been worried all along because it's now clear that Kenyans can unite without him, putting his bargaining power at risk," a netizen said on X.

The youth dismissed all attempts at dialogue, stating that if there were to be any talks, they should be between Raila and Ruto to discuss their own affairs.

"The dialogue is between two individuals, William Ruto and Raila Odinga. We refuse to be controlled by selfish politicians who only value their stomachs," Cornelius Ronoo wrote on his X platform.

Others added, "Neither Ruto nor Raila speaks on our behalf. We are partyless, we are tribeless, and most importantly, we are leaderless."

"My advice to you as a Gen Z is this: if you want to secure your legacy in the hearts and minds of young people and have them continue to sing your praises long after you exit the stage, stay away from the oppressor. To us, justice matters more than peace." Another gave him his piece his of mind.

However, Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says he has received messages from Kenyans opposing any plan for a handshake with President William Ruto.

In a post on X, Raila was seen in pictures with Senators Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi), Eddy Oketch (Migori), and Crystal Asige (nominated), among others.

"Nimeambiwa na hawa viongozi kwamba mumesema hamtaki handshake. Ujumbe umefika," Raila said in a caption to the pictures. This translates to, "I have been told by these leaders that you said you don't want a handshake. The message has been received."
