Occupy Mombasa: Finance Bill Protests Continue on Day Two in the Coastal City

Despite ongoing rains, hundreds of protesters gathered in Mombasa streets to demonstrate against the Finance Bill 2024, mobilized through social media. Police have been deployed, and the Mapembeni area, intended as the central meeting point, has been cordoned off. A video showed residents singing and chanting in the Mombasa CBD, carrying placards and singing "Utawala" by hip hop artist Juliani, continuing their protests amid the rain and police presence.

Chaos and running battles dominated Mombasa streets on Wednesday as youths took to the streets to protest over President Ruto's plan to finance his Sh.3.9 trillion budget. A day after their Nairobi counterparts staged a similar feat.

The 'Occupy Mombasa' protests were organized via social media platforms such as WhatsApp, X, and TikTok.

The demonstrators clashed with anti-riot police officers deployed to control the protests. Roads and businesses were deserted, with shops remaining closed for most of Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, Kenyans confronted police in Nairobi's Central Business District while protesting the bill. Within hours, officers had used teargas and arrested several protesters, who were later released.

Posters shared online indicate that the #OccupyParliament protests will continue on Thursday in other counties, including Meru, Eldoret, Laikipia, Nakuru, and Nyeri.

On Wednesday, MPs will debate the bill during its Second Reading, with a vote scheduled for Thursday to either approve or reject it.

Meanwhile, protestors have promised tomorrow will be bigger.

ALUTA CONTINUA!!!
