Finance Bill 2024: Ruto Reverses Major Tax Proposals

Image
The Kenya Kwanza Government has withdrawn major tax proposals that recently sparked public outrage. This decision was announced after President William Ruto held a parliamentary group meeting at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday. In a subsequent press briefing, the Ruto team stated that the proposals were dropped in response to public opposition during a participation exercise. “The exercise we did on public participation was not an exercise in futility," said National Assembly Finance Committee Chair Kuria Kimani. "We have agreed that we must protect Kenyans from increased cost of living." The government has dropped proposed taxes on bread, motor vehicles, eco-tax, vegetable oil, locally manufactured diapers, and sanitary pads. Finance Bill Relief: MPs Yield to Public Pressure, Remove 'Punitive' Taxes

Image
The persistent pressure from Kenyans seems to have paid off, as the National Assembly's Finance Committee agreed last evening to remove some of the punitive taxes proposed in the Finance Bill, 2024. Kenya Kwanza MPs announced on Tuesday that they had taken into account the concerns expressed by Kenyans regarding the Finance Bill, 2024. The committee is expected to present its report with recommendations to the House today. Both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio MPs have been summoned to meetings by their leadership to solidify their positions on the Bill. Kenya Kwanza’s parliamentary group, led by President William Ruto, faces internal tensions as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been accused of encouraging MPs to reject the Bill due to its punitive proposals. Azimio has also called on its members to oppose the Bill, but with the committee now recommending the removal of the punitive taxes, the MPs' approach to the debate remains uncertain. Clash of the Titans: Of Presidents, Their Spokespeople and our Money

The tiff between Retired President Kenyatta's office and President Ruto's State House popped up on our screens about two years ago as a spin off to the disparity between the two leaders post-handshake. Recently, it escalated with Former Statehouse Spokesperson Kanze Dena taking to the media to lay forth their grievances. What followed was the Government Spokesperson clapping back with a statement to prove her otherwise.  This has however prompted President William Ruto to move swiftly and bridge the matter. Here is an overview of the unfolding stalemate.  In a recent turn of events, President William Ruto and his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, engaged in discussions aimed at resolving a standoff over retirement benefits. The negotiations, which followed behind-the-scenes interactions involving Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, signify a significant attempt to address grievances and ensure the smooth functioning of Kenyatta's post-presidential office. Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima has passed away. President Lazarus Chakwera announced his death during a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon. A military aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice President went missing on Monday morning, causing global concern over the fate of its occupants. The aircraft, carrying 51-year-old Vice President Saulos Chilima, departed from the capital, Lilongwe, at 9:17 am (0717 GMT) but was unable to land at Mzuzu airport as scheduled at 10:02 am due to poor visibility. "The board of directors of Directline has been dissolved and all the assets taken over by Royal Credit Ltd. Senate Amendments Weaken Conflict of Interest Bill, Undermining Anti-Corruption Efforts

Image
Narok Senator and Senate Minority Whip, Ledama Ole Kina. Parliament has made amendments to the Conflict-of-Interest Bill, 2023 and this has dealt a major blow to the fight against corruption. These alterations allow state officials to do business with government and shield people, and even their closest ones, from accountability on the part of every taxpaying citizen. Proposed by the Cabinet to counter rampant embezzlement of public funds and secure loans under pressure from the IMF, the legislation has been significantly watered down by recent amendments from the Senate. These amendments exclude the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) from the Act’s supervision. Sponsored by Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina, the Senate minority whip, the amendments have over time significantly transformed the bill. It has now been taken back to the National Assembly for approval and will be forwarded to the president for signing. In a Hansard obtained from parliament, Senator Ledama ole Kina pro
