CS Mithika Linturi Impeachment Motion Proceeds


On Thursday, the National Assembly passed a motion to remove Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi from office.

A total of 149 MPs supported the motion, with 36 opposing it. Three MPs abstained from voting.

Subsequently, an 11-member select committee will be established, mandated to investigate the allegations leveled against the Cabinet Secretary within a period of 10 days.

During today's special debate, one-third of the 349 members were needed to advance the process to the next stage, which equates to 116 members.

The 11-member select committee will include six members from the majority party, Kenya Kwanza, four from the minority party, and one from the Jubilee party.

In his directive, Wetangula instructed the parliamentary teams to submit their nominations by 1:45 pm.

"I direct that the names must be submitted to me not later than 1.45 p.m.," he directed.

The House Business Committee will subsequently need to present a motion to the House for the consideration of the nominated individuals.

In selecting the names, the Speaker instructed the parliamentary groups to adhere to regional and gender representation guidelines.

During the motion to endorse the nominated individuals, a vote will be conducted, giving members the option to either approve the entire list or omit certain names.

Upon full establishment, the committee will be mandated to present its findings to the House within a 10-day period.

Consequently, the appointed committee members may need to convene as early as next week to commence deliberations on the issue.



Should the committee find the allegations to be baseless, no additional measures will be pursued.

However, if the committee validates the accusations, the Cabinet Secretary will be afforded the chance to present a defense. Subsequently, the House will vote on whether to accept or reject the committee's findings.

Should the House affirm the committee's conclusions, the Speaker will communicate the decision to the President, who will then proceed to dismiss the Cabinet Secretary from office.
