Ruto Chairs UDA National Steering Committee Meeting in Nairobi

On Tuesday March 2, Ruto chaired the National Steering Committee meeting at the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Headquarters in Nairobi.

Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other key UDA officials was expected to lead discussions centering on the party's elections.

The gathering occurred several months following the decision by the ruling UDA Party to postpone its elections from December to April 12, 2024. Subsequently, the elections were further staggered to April 26, extending the timeline.

Now, President William Ruto has removed five members from the UDA elections board, leaving only two in significant shake-ups before the party's polls.

As the leader of the United Democratic Alliance party, the President dismissed Salome Beacco, Aurelia Rono, Ummi Bashir, Matiko Chacha, and Raphael Chimera.

In these adjustments, UDA maintained Anthony Mwaura, the Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority and a longtime ally of Ruto, as the board's chairperson, along with member Halake Dida.

The president's decision to keep Mwaura in his position may indicate his trust in Mwaura, who supervised the UDA primaries prior to the 2022 general election.

Mwaura officially became the new KRA chairman on November 24, 2022, succeeding Francis Muthaura, whose term ended.

The newly appointed members of the UDA elections board are Veronica Kiberenge as Vice Chairperson, Lydia Munika, Jimmy Kaingi, Mary Mutinga, and Linda Kiome.

These changes to the UDA elections board were announced on Tuesday during a meeting chaired by President Ruto at the party's headquarters, the Hustler Centre.

Joy Mdivo assumed the role of Chairperson, with Dr. Adrian Kamotho appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the Electoral Disputes Resolution Committee (EDRC). Within the same committee, the party also selected seven members: Hellen Makone, Yvonne Cherop Kae, Dr. Duncan Ojwang, Dr. Kaberia Isaac, Barbra Japan, Anjichi Joseph, and Ziporah Karimi Muiruri.

Rebecca Tonkeias was designated as the leader of the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC). Joining her in this committee are Hon. Hassan Omar, Dr. Joshua On’gera, Leah Manyarkiy, Hon. Samuel Kariuki, Bishop Robert Theuri, and Ronald Shako.

The new team will oversee the party's upcoming grassroots and national elections, starting later this month.

Originally scheduled for April 12, the elections will now begin on April 26, 2024, with a staggered start in seven counties.

According to UDA secretary general Cleopas Malala's statement on Tuesday, the initial phase of the elections will include Nairobi, Narok, West-Pokot, Busia, Homa Bay, Isiolo, and Garissa.

The party will proceed to conduct elections in its strongholds on June 22, covering 13 counties.

These counties in the second phase comprise Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kisii, Bungoma, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Wajir, Tana River, Kwale, and Marsabit.

Following that, the third phase will involve grassroots polls in 15 additional counties on August 10, 2024.

These counties in the third phase are Kiambu, Embu, Kericho, Meru, Migori, Kakamega, Nyamira, Kitui, Elgeyo Marakwet, Samburu, Kajiado, Mandera, Kilifi, Murang’a, and Lamu.

The final phase is scheduled for August 24, 2024, covering 12 counties: Nakuru, Bomet, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nandi, Baringo, Turkana, Laikipia, Trans-Nzoia, Kisumu, Vihiga, and Makueni.
