Reminiscence: The Instance General Ogolla Resigned from KDF

Several days following the burial of the late Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla, a video has surfaced depicting his near resignation from the military 26 years ago.

The late Ogolla had participated in the memorial service for the late retired Air Force commander Lieutenant General Nick Leshan at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi on September 8, 2021.

During his tribute, the late Ogolla recounted how Leshan persuaded him not to resign from service, reassuring him that he possessed the qualities necessary to rise to the position of Air Force commander.

"In 1998, I resigned from the military and so as protocol requires, I was taken to him for an interview," he recounted.

"I thought the interview would take 10 minutes and then he would sign my papers. He talked to me for three hours and when he finished these were his words: Francis, you have the potential to be the Air Force Commander, go back and work."

At that moment, he recounted deciding to retract his resignation and continue in his service.

In 2018, the late Ogolla reflected on how Nishan's words became a reality when he was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as the Air Force commander.

Recalling Nishan's counsel, he mentioned visiting him at his home in Narok to express gratitude for his foresight and wisdom.

"I remembered his words. I drove with my wife to Narok, and we sat with him. He talked to me again for three hours and when I was leaving, he brought a heap of books and gave me and said; I am glad you listened," he went on.

In 2021, the late Ogolla received a promotion to Lieutenant General and was appointed as the Vice Chief of Defence Forces, a position he held until 2023 when President William Ruto elevated him to the rank of General.

The late Nishan passed away at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi on September 3, 2021, after a period of hospitalization. He was laid to rest on September 10 at his home in Narok, with Ogolla among the dignitaries in attendance.

He concluded his service as the Vice Chief of Defence Forces, serving under General Jeremiah Kianga, who assumed leadership of the military in 2005 and eventually retired in 2011.
