Raila's Exit will Deal a Blow to Political Sycophants and Level the Playing Field in Luo Nyanza - Suba South MP Caroli Omondi

Many elected officials representing Nyanza would likely lose their reelection chances if ODM leader Raila Odinga were to step back from local politics, according to Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.

Raila is actively pursuing the role of the next African Union Commission chairman, a position that would necessitate his departure from local politics to lead the continent's foremost decision-making body.

If he secures this position, Caroli believes Raila's departure would pave the way for a fair competition among politicians vying for seats in Nyanza, potentially leading to the election of new faces.

The legislator noted that certain politicians in the area have underperformed unless they receive support from Raila during electoral campaigns.

Omondi expressed concern that these politicians would be left without strong backing if Raila departs for the AUC. Raila has garnered significant support from his Nyanza base, and candidates running under the ODM party banner typically face less resistance.

Caroli observed that these politicians have traditionally relied on Raila's endorsement to secure votes from residents.

Omondi remarked that these politicians may face challenges in the 2027 general election as they attempt to secure victory independently.

"Raila is my party leader and I wish him success in the AUC chairmanship bid. But I see his departure to Addis Ababa providing a level playfield for residents to elect a leader of their choice," said the lawmaker.

Suba South MP during a past meeting with IT Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo.

During a speech on Saturday at Nyakiamo Stadium in Sindo town market, where he unveiled three new school buses for Nyabera Girls, Gingo Mixed, and Nyagwethe Mixed secondary schools, Omondi stated that Raila's move to the AUC would put an end to the trend of certain politicians relying on his endorsement without putting in their own effort.

Additionally, the constituency allocated Sh40 million in bursaries to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Since 2007, Nyanza has served as a strong political base for Raila and the ODM party, with residents consistently voting for both him and the party's candidates.

The area comprises six counties: Homa Bay, Kisii, Siaya, Migori, Nyamira, and Kisumu.

"I foresee a fair competition among politicians after Raila become AUC chairman. People will elect leaders based on their capacity to undertake development because there will be no more endorsement," he added.

Accompanied by former Homa Bay public service board member Tobias Odundo and politician William Siro, the MP encouraged residents to prioritize development and assess leaders based on their past achievements.

He emphasized that during elections, residents should prioritize leaders' development capabilities over political party affiliations.

"What the people need is development and that is what we are doing. Let politicians, including my opponents in Suba South, to compete in development," he stated further.

Omondi is one of the ODM lawmakers labeled as rebels due to their decision to collaborate closely with President William Ruto's administration.

During a recent event, the MP defended his partnership with Ruto by highlighting its role in the construction of Suba South constituency's first tarmacked road.

This collaboration has also resulted in the establishment and official recognition of new administrative entities like Suba Central and Suba West Sub-counties.

"The ongoing tarmacking of Mbita-Sindo-Magunga-Sori Road is result of our working closely with President William Ruto. The government has installed free Wi-Fi in Magunga Market," Omondi said.

The collaboration has drawn criticism from Raila, who expressed dissatisfaction with not being consulted as his party leader.

As a result, Raila has recently endorsed ODM national chairman John Mbadi as the candidate for the Suba South parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections.

This endorsement has raised political tensions in Suba South, where Mbadi is actively campaigning to regain the seat he held for three terms.

"We'll leave no chance to Mbadi in Suba South. I will defeat him in 2027 elections because he will not cling to Raila's court anymore," said the legislature.
