Two Dead, 44 Escape Unhurt in Nairobi Mid-Air Collision
Police reported that a Cessna training aircraft collided with a passenger plane carrying 44 individuals above, Nairobi, on Tuesday, resulting in the fatalities of the student and instructor aboard the training aircraft.
The passenger airliner from local airline Safarilink was bound for Diani with 39 passengers onboard and had just taken off when it "experienced a loud bang", Safarilink said in their official statement.
The passenger airliner, a Dash 8 plane registration number 5Y-SLK was able to turn back and land at Wilson Airport and there were no casualties aboard, according to the airline.
The Cessna plane, owned by 99 Flying Club crushed into Nairobi National Park, killing the flight student and the instructor instantly.
According to Safarilink, its plane turned back after the mid-air crash.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Department has initiated an inquiry into the collision that occurred on Tuesday morning.
According to a statement from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the investigation, which will be conducted in collaboration with the National Police Service, aims to determine the cause of the collision between a Safarilink plane and a 99 Flying Club aircraft.
"Investigations have commenced through various government agencies led by the Air Accident Investigations Department (AAID) and the National Police Service to establish the cause of the accident," said Emile Arao, KCAA Director-General.
"Safety of the public, property, and operations remains paramount to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority."
The aviation regulatory body is obligated to investigate and provide a report whenever safety incidents are reported.
