Ruto Pledges to Agree with Gachagua to Preserve UDA Running Mate Post for Woman

On Thursday, President William Ruto affirmed his dedication to ensuring full implementation of the two-thirds gender rule within his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and throughout the broader Kenya Kwanza government.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Women Governors Caucus G7 Strategy at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Ruto emphasized his administration's commitment to realizing gender inclusion as outlined in the constitution, promising proactive measures. He delegated the responsibility to UDA party chairperson Cecily Mbarire to develop legislation mandating that presidential candidates select running mates of the opposite gender.

"Cecily Mbarire is the chair of UDA not by default, it is deliberate and intentional, and one of the assignments she has is that we must as a party lead from the front..."

"When Riggy and myself agree on how things will go in the future we must also agree that going forward if a man is a candidate for president the woman must be a running mate and if a woman is a candidate, then a man should be the running mate," President Ruto said amid a cheering crowd.

"We must be deliberate and intentional about it otherwise it will never happen." He added.

The president further mentioned that the proposal would extend to various roles, such as governorships, among others. He asserted that the intention behind this initiative wasn't to diminish men but rather to establish equilibrium and fulfill the constitutional mandate of the two-thirds gender rule.

The leader commended women for their consistency in fulfilling their duties, recounting the unwavering support he has consistently received from them since his tenure as Deputy President.

"When I ran into political turbulence as deputy president, more women stood by me than men in my team. And that is a fact. In the last election, more women voted for me than men," he further stated.

"Therefore supporting them is the easiest thing for me. Apart from the fact that in my family I have more women family members than men."

He also encouraged men to take a leading role in safeguarding women against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), especially in areas where the practice is prevalent.

The G7 is a caucus comprising the seven women governors elected in Kenya. These are: Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru) and Fatuma Achani (Kwale).

The current number of women governors is a significant improvement from the 2017 elections when only three women were elected governors. The caucus seeks to empower and support women in demonstrating efficient, transformational and strategic governance within the devolved structures. Friday, March 8 is International Women's Day.
