Charity Ngilu Holds Special Place in our Country - President Ruto
President William Ruto recently expressed that former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu holds a special place in Kenya's history.
At the inauguration of the Council of Governors Women caucus, known as the G7, Ruto highlighted Ngilu's pioneering role as the first Kenyan woman to run for the presidency. He emphasized that her courageous endeavor served as a source of inspiration for numerous women who hold leadership positions today.
Ruto encouraged all female leaders to pass on the mentorship they received from Ngilu to the next generation of leaders.
"Ngilu occupies a special place in our country. She is the first woman to dare vie for president. Charity is many times hard on me but she is a great inspiration to many women across Kenya. Her daring spirit has inspired many of you who are leaders," Ruto said.
"The mentorship Charity gave you please mentor others going into the future,"
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja while speaking at the same event showered Mama Ngilu with praise for setting the pace in women leadership. He said that Ngilu stood as a beacon of hope for many women leaders in the country.
"Thank you for paving the way for women's leadership in Kenya. If it were not for you, many women governors wouldn't have the courage to join politics," he said.
Charity Ngilu was first elected as member of parliament for Kitui Central Constituency in 1992, a position she served in until 2013.
During the 1997 general election, Ngilu ran for the position of Kenya's first female president under the Social Democratic Party of Kenya banner. Despite her efforts, she finished fifth, with the late President Daniel Moi emerging as the eventual winner.
Subsequently, she became a member of the National Party of Kenya. In the December 2002 general election, her party aligned with the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which emerged victorious. Following the election, President Mwai Kibaki appointed her as the Minister of Health when he announced his Cabinet on January 3, 2003. Additionally, she was appointed as the chairperson of NARC.
Ngilu's political career also includes serving as Minister for Health from 2003 to 2007 and Minister of Water and Irrigation from April 2008 to 2013.
She also served as Cabinet Secretary for Land, Housing and Urban Development from 2013 up to 2015 in former president Uhuru Kenyatta's government.
Ngilu was among the three pioneer female governors. She was elected in 2017, defeating the then-incumbent Julius Malombe to become the governor of Kitui County. However, in 2022, Ngilu chose not to defend the seat for a second term, opting to instead support Raila Odinga in the Azimio Presidental Campaign.
