Over 2000 Public Servants Got Hired Using Fake Certificates: Interior Ministry, KNH Lead

The Public Service Commission (PSC) shared some worrying news. They found out that some people working in important government jobs got those jobs using fake certificates.

The PSC said this on Tuesday. They found that many of these people work in places like the Ministry of Interior, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), and the Geothermal and Development Corporation, which is part of the Ministry of Energy.

The PSC Chairman, Ambassador Anthony Muchiri, talked to the media about this. He said they found 2,067 cases of forgery in an investigation they started in October 2022.

They looked into 331 institutions, including 52 Ministries and Agencies, 239 State companies, and 40 public universities. These institutions had to give lists of graduates for the last 10 years, lists of new graduates every year, and let the PSC verify certificates online.

But only 195 places followed the rules. Out of 58,599 cases they checked, 1,280 turned out to be fake. Muchiri said they're still checking, so they might find more.

They also found that 787 officers used fake documents to obtain appointments, promotions and transfers. This includes people in universities and tertiary institutions.

They found a range of different types of forgery. The PSC noted that the most common types of forgery include fake academic certificates, alteration of KCSE average grades, fake KCSE certificates, fake certificates and situations where certificates were presented to secure jobs but did not belong to the alleged holder.

The PSC wants all these cases to go to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for punishment. They also want these people to lose any benefits they got from their jobs, like pensions or allowances. EACC Chairperson Mr. Twalib Mbarak said the EACC would recover the money obtained through the fake certificates and action would be taken against the culprits.

The PSC has given their report to the DCI and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for further action.
