Lawyers Vote Faith Odhiambo as New LSK President

Faith Odhiambo, who previously held the position of Vice President within the Law Society of Kenya, has been successfully elected as the new president in the recent Thursday, 29 February elections. The competition for the presidency featured five contenders: Peter Wanyama, Carolyne Kamende, Faith Odhiambo, Harriet Mboche, and Kipkoech Bernhard Ngetich.

According to the results reported by the Star, Odhiambo secured 3,113 votes, closely followed by Wanyama with 2,165 votes. Kamende received 888 votes, Ngetich garnered 833 votes, and Mboche obtained 511 votes. Wanyama, who was considered Faith's primary opponent, has acknowledged his defeat, attributing it to allegations of being supported by the government.

"That hurt my campaign because throughout the period I have used very limited resources, No single coin from the government. Secondly, I have taken major cases against the national government to protect devolution," Wanyama said in a statement.

"I have lost on paper to Faith Odhiambo, who I unreservedly congratulate, but I have won at heart. I have achieved my lifetime objective of interacting with colleagues and demonstrated the eternal verities and the spirit of Ubuntu. I have made friends, created networks and tested my leadership skills in an 'election exam'," he added.

Faith becomes the 51st president of the LSK after succeeding Eric Theuri.

Theuri's tenure will conclude on March 25, 2024. However, according to the LSK General Regulations of 2020, the position was declared vacant on December 5, 2023. These regulations stipulate that the position must be declared vacant at least three months prior to March 15 of the election year.

During her campaign, Odhiambo emphasized her dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the council remains a staunch advocate for legal principles.

On election day, Odhiambo received endorsements from ODM leader Raila Odinga and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, signaling their support for her candidacy.

"An engaging conversation with Faith Odhiambo, LSK Vice President and aspiring LSK President. Her commitment to upholding the rule of law and advocating for good governance principles is truly inspiring. I wish her all the best and she has my full support," Raila said after meeting her on Wednesday.

She becomes the second woman to hold the LSK top position, Raychelle Omamo served from 2001 to 2003.

Thursday's elections were conducted across the country overseen by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC.

Additional positions slated for new member elections comprised the vice president role and council members, encompassing three representatives from the general membership, four representatives from upcountry regions, three from Nairobi, and one from the Coast.

Furthermore, members voted for LSK male representatives to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), with the outgoing LSK President Theuri vying for this position.
