'Guilty As Charged' Landmark Ruling Finds Former US President Guilty of all Charges

In a historic moment on Thursday, Donald Trump was convicted for a crime, making him the first former US president to do so. A jury in New York convicted him on all charges in his hush money case, weeks before an election that may result in his presidency again. The jury found him guilty on all 34 counts of submitting false business records for the purpose of covering up a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. While he legally might be given up to four years of imprisonment for each count, the most probable outcome will be probation.

The 77-year-old Republican, who was released without bail, is now a felon, making it a historical and rather surprising precedent in a country where presidents are often referred to as the most powerful people in the world. However, Trump can still run for president in the November election and potentially challenge President Joe Biden even if he is imprisoned.

His lawyer, Todd Blanche, said he would be filing an appeal “as soon as we can. ” Trump himself was defiant in the aftermath of the verdict.

"I'm a very innocent man," Trump told reporters, vowing that the "real verdict" would come from voters on election day. He branded the trial as "rigged" and a "disgrace."

Biden's campaign issued a statement saying the trial demonstrated that "no one is above the law" and added, "the threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater."

Judge Juan Merchan set the sentencing for July 11, only four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where Trump is to be nominated for the presidency. The jury took over 11 hours, two days in fact, to reach a 12:0 decision before taking only a few minutes to announce it.

Trump was convicted of paying $130,000 to his lawyer, Michael Cohen, to buy the silence of a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who could have damaged his chances against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election by revealing the affair. The trial involved a great deal of the testimonies from the adult performer, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, detailing the graphic details of the affair that she had with Trump in 2006 when the latter was a married man.

The prosecutors were able to convince the jury that the payment of hush money and its subsequent cover up were part of a pattern of conduct aimed at ensuring that the electorate would not get to know about Trump’s behavior.
