Flooding Crisis: Flooding in The Mara

Tourists were airlifted from the Maasai Mara National Reserve on Wednesday following flooding that affected numerous hotels, lodges, and camps due to ongoing heavy rainfall.

Accommodation facilities for tourists were inundated after a river in the Maasai Mara overflowed early Wednesday. Situated in southwestern Kenya, the reserve is renowned for its annual wildebeest migration from Tanzania's Serengeti and attracts a large number of visitors.

The Kenya Red Cross reported that they conducted air rescues for 36 individuals and land rescues for 25 others. The Narok County government disclosed that they dispatched two helicopters to facilitate evacuations within the extensive conservation area.

Since mid-March, over 170 individuals have lost their lives in Kenya due to the onset of the rainy season, resulting in flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. The Meteorology Department has issued warnings of further rainfall anticipated throughout the week.

A river breached a blocked tunnel in the Mai Mahiu region of western Kenya on Monday, resulting in the destruction of homes and roads. This tragic incident claimed the lives of 48 individuals, while over 80 others remain unaccounted for.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway across the Mai Mahiu area. President William Ruto issued orders on Tuesday for the military to assist in the search efforts.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the sluggish pace of rescue operations, citing a shortage of equipment to clear through the debris.

The government has advised individuals residing in flood-prone regions to evacuate voluntarily or face mandatory relocation as water levels in two major hydroelectric dams reach unprecedented heights.
