Shooter at Lakewood Church Identified; Genesse Ivonne Moreno: 'Palestine' Written on Gun.



Police in Houston, Texas, identified the person who shot at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church on Sunday. Her name is Genesse Ivonne Moreno. She's from El Salvador and has had a lengthy criminal record. She even used another name, Jeffrey Escalante Moreno.

The police officers at the church stopped Moreno, but not before two people got hurt – a 57-year-old man and a child with Moreno. They found out later that Moreno was the child's mom.

Moreno had a gun with the word "Palestine" on it. She pointed it at the police officers, so they had to shoot her to protect themselves.



Moreno wasn't a stranger to breaking the law. She did crimes before like assaulting a police officer in 2009 and forgery in 2010.

The police looked into Moreno's home in Conroe, a place near Houston, to find out more about her. They had help from different law agencies like the FBI and the Texas Rangers.

On Sunday, just before the Lakewood Church's Spanish service, Moreno came in with a big gun and a child. She started shooting, but the off-duty officers acted fast and stopped her. Sadly, the child got hurt badly and might not make it.

Investigators found another gun with Moreno, a smaller one. They'll figure out how she got them, especially because one was bought legally not long ago.

Inside Moreno's car, they found mean things written about Jewish people. It might have to do with problems between Moreno and her ex-husband's family, who are Jewish.

Joel Osteen, the church's pastor, said he was very sad about what happened. He thanked the police for stopping Moreno.



The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, also said it was a very sad event.

We still don't know why Moreno did this. The police are checking the officers' body cameras and the church's security cameras to find out more.
